Ice Dams and Winter Roof Damage: What Massachusetts Homeowners Need to Know
If you've owned a home in Framingham, Hopkinton, or anywhere in MetroWest Massachusetts through a real New England winter, you've probably seen ice dams. That thick ridge of ice along the eave of your roof isn't just ugly — it can cause thousands of dollars in damage if left unaddressed, eventually leading to a full roof replacement.
What Is an Ice Dam?
An ice dam forms when heat escaping from your home warms the upper portion of your roof, melting snow. That water runs down toward the colder eaves and refreezes. As the cycle repeats, ice builds up and water backs up under your shingles — directly into your home.
What Causes Them?
The root cause is almost always inadequate insulation or ventilation in the attic. When attic temperatures are too warm, the roof deck heats unevenly, triggering the melt-refreeze cycle. Older homes in Framingham and the MetroWest area — many built in the 1960s through 1980s — are especially susceptible.
Short-Term vs. Long-Term Solutions
- Short-term: Roof rakes to remove snow before it melts, and calcium chloride ice melt in a stocking laid perpendicular to the eave to create a drainage channel. Do not use rock salt — it damages shingles and gutters.
- Long-term: Proper attic insulation and ventilation addressed during a roof replacement. This is the only permanent fix.
When to Call a Roofer
If you're seeing water stains on your ceiling or walls during or after winter, the damage is already happening. Don't wait until spring — moisture in your walls and ceiling leads to mold that compounds quickly.
